Community Art Project – Healing Blankets

Friday 8:00pm, Saturday Ongoing, Sunday Closing 11:30am

Join artist Deb Cinamon Whalen and make a healing blanket for the earth. She uses the blankets to connect students to nature and teach them about mountain top removal coal mining (MTR). Learning about environmental issues becomes more meaningful when students are engaged in a process that connects them to nature. You will have the opportunity to create a felted mini blanket from wool fleece, seeds, and other collected organic materials. Deb will demonstrate and lead participants through the process of making a blanket on Friday evening. Friday evening participants and can then reach out to interested conferees on Saturday and help them make a blanket. All blankets will be hung to dry and exhibited. At the closing on Sunday, conferees will work together to combine all individual blankets into a large quilt. All who would like to participate in making a healing blanket should bring a sewing needle, thread and an extra towel, if possible. The blankets will act as a bridge between our communities when they are sent to students and teachers in West Virginia who have been active in the fight against MTR. They will be asked to install the blankets into the landscape to help regenerate and heal the earth that has been damaged by MTR.
